About 5% of the population has an allergy to cow’s milk from birth. This can lead to significant symptoms and a lot of discomforts.
ALLERGY VS SENSITIVITY
An allergy is much more serious than sensitivity. A milk allergy can cause asthma, colic, mucus production, and life-threatening anaphylaxis in very rare cases.
A milk sensitivity usually shows itself with a lot of gas, discomfort, and diarrhea.
While neither is great, a milk allergy is much more serious.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Cow’s milk protein allergy/sensitivity can present in numerous ways. Symptoms may include:
- Rashes or eczema
- Blood or mucus in the baby’s stool
- Facial swelling
- Stunted growth
If your baby is experiencing just one of the symptoms above, it is unlikely that he or she has an allergy or even a sensitivity to cow’s milk protein. If several symptoms show up at once, however, it might point to allergy or another condition that needs further investigation.
If you’re not sure, keep track in a journal, even on your phone. Track every unusual symptom so you can tell the doctor.
IF YOU THINK YOUR BABY HAS MILK SENSITIVITY YOU MIGHT NEED TO SWITCH TO A HYPO-ALLERGENIC FORMULA
While regular formula is made with cow’s milk and contains complete proteins, in HiPP hypoallergenic formula, those proteins are broken down or hydrolyzed. Because they’re smaller, they’re easier for little tummies to digest.
In breaking down the long-chain proteins from milk, this hypoallergenic formula contains amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins. This gives your baby the nutrients she needs without the complex proteins that her body struggles to process.
Often, the sensitivity is specifically to cow’s milk so that you can switch to one of the Holle Goat’s milk-based formulas.
